Atari Teenage Riot – Black Flags video

Atari Teenage riot black flag logo?
Now this is a protest song featuring all sorts of riot mayhem, police and anonymous action by the band Atari Teenage Riot. ATR wants you to lip sync to this tune and film yourself doing it with a black flag in the background. No not Rollin’s and Ginn’s Black Flag logo. A solid black one like the illustration above. A sure fire way of getting on a watch list so be sure to wear a mask with the mouth cut-out at least. Make sure to look angry and sinister!

R.E.M. are not dead they just broke-up

R.E.M. are not dead they just broke-up

It's the end of R.E.M and we know it I remember in 8th grade this skater name Rusty gave me Murmur because he just didn’t get it. It was probably one of the weirdest random gifts of music I ever got. The first time I heard “Radio Free Europe” was a high-school band covering the song then within literally a couple months I had the original version of the song where this whole world opened up I did not know existed. It was one of the signs I should quit my cover band and look for other kids making original music. That first original band a couple years later would be called the Unemployed, then The Leisure Set and my senior year Psychic Fair then a whole shit-tone saga of bands, records and recordings since.

From Murmur to New Day Rising I was hooked on this alternative music thing. I think Hüsker Dü put the nail in the cofin but it was definitely a moment when I thought. Hell I can make punk music if they can. This sounds easy instead of these Rush covers like “XYZ” and “Spirit of the radio”. Mike Stipe made it ok to not be so secure and to just let it out with a nice subtle twist with his almost undiscernible lyrics. Mills made it ok to be a melodic bass player and play some chords. Peter Buck was just cool. Hell he played on Let it Be by The Replacements. I think a super geek thing when on tour one time was when my band old indie band Aviso’Hara of 10 years played the 40 Watt, I met Buck’s ex wife which i think she wanted the club in their divorce settlement and then as we were driving out of town we made sure to drive by the restaurant Automatic for the People where REM named said record after. Anyway, heard on the internet we all have a reunion show to look forward to. They are as iconic as The Rolling Stones in my book. Thanks for all the great music boys.

Alternative Music for Dad’s playlist

Alternative Music for Dad’s playlist

Father's Day playlist music mix If Keith Richards can be dad so can I. I had no clue I’d be a dad one day. Now with two lovely daughters who are sure to give me some challenges one day you gotta wonder how I’m going to make it through. I know I’ll persevere or just move-out. One of my tips for listening to the music you want on the on road-trip. So you can listen to what you want in the car when you want to listen to these tracks is make the wife drive and you wear the headphones so you don’t have to listen to the princess music. This is option or wait until they fall asleep. Anyway here’s a few songs for good old dads. I’m sure there are plenty more.

Long Gone Daddy MP3 by Nine Pound Hammer from Smoking Taters. It’s about getting in a fight and leaving. Classic rip roaring trucker punk.

Kicked My Dad MP3 by Buzzkill. This is a fast classic bar rock track by New Brunswick, NJ college punks formerly known as Butthead.

Beer For Breakfast MP3 by The Replacements from All for Nothing B-Sides. This is a A-side if I ever heard one and I think the best beer is the first beer and if my lifestyle allowed and I could be on “vacation” everyday and there could be a nice cool breeze hitting me in the face; a beer with breakfast is the way to go especially with weovos rancheros and a coffee to wake your ass-up.

Piss Up A Rope MP3 by Ween from 12 Golden Country Greats. Classic Dean Ween. “I’m sick of your mouth and your 2% percent milk” Man these are some of the most comedically satisfying lyrics that gets down to the business of falatio and not taking shit from the wife. NSFW but funny as hell. Good road trip song. Anybody have the bootleg of them live playing with version of the band in NYC?

’69 Dodge Charger MP3 by The X-Rays from Double Godzilla (with Cheese) via eMpTy Records (1996) . I’m not sure how complete if this playlist did not include a song about a car. My secret fantasy is to own a muscle car with race car style seat belts that gets shitty gas mileage and is fast as bull balls. So here’s a song that does this idea justice.

Beggin’ Dogs MP3 by Obits from Moody, Standard, and Poor. Again any song about a dog is good. This song ain’t a dog though.

Daddy MP3 by Tall Dwarfs from Fork Songs. Pretty amazing band to begin. It’s lo-fi. This particular track has hypnotic riff set to some tv track backdrop.

It’s a Man’s Man’s Man’s World MP3 by James Brown because it is a man’s world but it wouldn’t mean nothing without a woman or a girl. Amen. Classic misogyny at it’s best.

Trinidad Bump MP3 from Falling off the Reel via Truth & Soul label. If you like the disco era Clash with the bongos and funky driving bass lines this track will totally remind you of that. This instrumental should sneak it’s way into your playlist to add some soul to mix. Plain and simple.

It’s a Man’s Man’s Man’s World MP3 by James Brown. E’nuf said.

Alternative Rock is now for 50 year olds?

Alternative Rock is now for 50 year olds?

What? How did this happen all of a sudden? Sort of rellavation that two very different musical trail blazers turned 50 this year along with many other singing alternative icons. Daniel Johnston’s Birthday was in January and Henry Rollins’s was 02.13.61 to be exact. I know this because it says it on the spine of the Black Flag tour diary he wrote called Get In The Van ||||. Fast forward and the Rollins Band is playing a show at The Fastlane II in Asbury Park and he mentions he just turned 30 and you could not trust him anymore. I can’t believe that was 20 motherfucking years ago! Daniel Johnston’s child like lyrics always were and will be trust worthy but Hank was trying to tell me something. Then Rollins released a song called “Liar” pre-shotgun in mouth right as everyone including were cashing in or checking out as the case may be. So I laughed so hard when I first saw the video in a AIM Marketing meeting. He was dressed up like a cop and I thought this has to be a joke. He hates cops but the other young phone retailers had never been exposed to him before and the company owners in particular didn’t understand this outburst. This was serious business marking the punk. We had to help sell this record into stores across North America and we did. That job didn’t last long mostly because I used to gather my info and then chat with folks on the companies dime about other cool music to help pass the time. Oh well. Ancient history but I guess the point is this was the moment when i knew alternative music was over as I knew it.

I’m not sure I buy the whole 50 is the new 40, and 40 is the new 30 because how do you explain those random gray hairs by my balls? The goods news is that these gateway artists are still looking from right side of the grass but who’s going to cary the torch now?

Grandpaboy - I want my money back b/w Undone 7\

So if you rushed to order “This Machine” b/w “Foolish Hand Shake”, by Mr. F (aka Grandpaboy aka PW) the vinyl has sold out but have no fear another pressing is coming. I can’t wait to add to my collection of basement recordings from Paul Westerberg’s alter ego or should I say Wintrope Marion Percival the V! In any case here are a couple older rockers from the ex-replacements front-man. I’d love to be able to stop by his place to hear all tunes he just has laying around. This single came out in 1997 Soundproof and Monolythe records. “I want my money back” swings fast alla early chuck berry or AC/DC – what ever you prefer. He’s a fast talking and guitar picking maniac. If you play it 33 1/3 it does not sound half bad. Lots hootin’ and hollering. With a little precise break where he says “Fuck-it.” It’s a quick throw-down kids. On the flip side is something more country about his shirt giving to him by his sister and maybe you can be the one to help these buttons come undone. Classic Westerberg Lyrics.
