Melvins The Bride Screamed Murder

Melvins The Bride Screamed Murder

Always have loved the Melvins and it’s super awesome to hear them true to form in darker and simpler ways on The Bride Screamed Murder which was released this past summer. I don’t think they will ever sell-out Hollywood style and if they would they are probably too retarded to even make a reality show worthwhile. I think only a few folks would laugh being is that I loved Greg The Bunny. They eat hipsters for breakfast for one thing. Anyway, their rock is anvil ugly at times, self-mocking almost always but done with a shit-eating grin. Their bombastic capabilities always keep morphing and re-inventing over and over through volumes of material on what is loosely defined as heavy metal. Buzzo and Dale Crover are always humble geniuses and I consider them the deans of metal for simpletons. The way it should be.

Sonic Youth Sister and Daydream Nation on emusic

Sonic Youth Sister and Daydream Nation on emusic

Sonic Youth Sister

Sonic Youth Sister

Sister by Sonic Youth was one of those records that changed my opinion on what was punk back in 1987. What sealed the deal was seeing them play live at CBGBs for the first on a hot summer in 1988 months before Daydream Nation came out. It’s was one of those shows where they played the whole record from front-to-back. Everybody in the audience also new Sister and Evol but it didn’t matter. This was a double dose of their next steps. I remember all the fucked up guitars on the stage with large letters on them all set-up for each particular tune. When the drums kicked in on Teenage Riot the whole place lit up and people disappeared into the speakers and into the guitars.

These two records are probably the two best things on Emusic right now. Everything else that followed pales in guitarnovation then and now in my humble opinion and at 50 cents a song is not a bad deal considering I payed about that to own these on vinyl and are still my go to Lps when I need to escape into some sweet blissful noise. Over the years I’ve seen Sonic Youth and honestly they are still the same. Back then they were on the edge and they kept working and making these cityscapes out of walls of sound using the hand manipulated guitars and a rhythm section that just drove it in. Other times it was slow space jam which had the same effect. It’s the sort of thing that can not be replicated or hacked on a computer. This was BC(before computers) with the right amount of distortion and feedback made all the difference. What you committed to tape either worked or it didn’t. That was the magic and every time I hear even a glimmer of “it” in anybody’s music these days I get excited and my ear perk up like I’ve been starving for years . So get me excited.

Radical Rock Reactionaries

Radical Rock Reactionaries

Way back in the mid-80’s there was a great local alternative band called Animation
that borrowed from Echo and The Bunnymen, Lou reed and whatever was hip at the time. The town benefited from having a pretty decent local record shop called the Music Staff. Life was good. Animation’s release Loud Day had everything; a great intro song with a stomping bass part promised you that the rest would be great and it was with suburban themes and a cover of The Velvet Underground. It didn’t get any cooler. Ok maybe, I’m lying. Westfield High School in the 80’s was not a normal place when I think about it. One of the school clubs was called the Young Leftist and another one The Radical Rock Reactionaries (RRR) that was found by the Margulis Brother’s Oren (88) and Gil(86). They put on shows and is where I got my taste of original live music not just attendee but as a musician. i was part of the scene and where i got to know the Don, Jerry and Bob from the Whirling Dervishes (pictured) – i probably saw them play more times than I can count. The good thing it was great every time. One of the bands RRR got to play early on was Animation who originated black T-shirt as far as I was concerned. Other bands that made appearances for RRR were Hoboken’s Tiny Lights, Das Damen (SST), the Whirling Dervishes of course, Spiral Jetty, The Unemployed (haha a one off band of mine) and Psychic Fair (WHS 86-88). There were probably others and maybe I’ll remember them later but in the meantime here are some selects by said “local” bands that enriched my life and introduced me to whole other world of alternative music. Another band that was in a parallel music universe to Westfield was Skunk from Maplewood, NJ. Enjoy. More later.

MP3s:
Animation – What goes on (Velvet Underground cover)
Animation – Hide & Go Seek off of Loud Day(Vital Records)
Das Damen – Gray Isn’t Black from Jupiter Eye(SST)
Tiny Light – Sweet Solutions from LP Prayer for the halcyon fear
Spiral Jetty – The Hour from Dogstar LP (Absolute a go go/Rough Trade)
Skunk – (There’ll Be Other Girls) Hoss from Last American Virgin LP (Twin/Tone)
Skunk – Chezone and Trevor
Whirling Dervishes – Cop from the CD Strange & Wonderful
Whirling Dervishes – Your Little Finger from the CD Strange & Wonderful
