Fascinating behind the scene stories about one of the coolest legendary punk rock clubs, City Gardens, in the very scenic Trenton New Jersey, spanning the late 1970’s to 1994. DJ Jeff Werz talks for 1:45 and plays lots of music with the authors. Amy Yates Wuelfing and Steven DiLodovico co-authors of “No Slam Dancing, No Stage Diving, No Spikes” talk about putting this book together and doing over 420 interviews! The book is named after the large ass sign at the door. This is when punk was dangerous and skin heads ruled the roost and one week you could go see the Circle Jerks and then the next Fishbone or ween. The book will be published March 10, 2013 and is available online at www.noslamdancing.com. We only got thrown out one time for stage diving at City Gardens and that was enough. My back still hurts!

by David | Dec 13, 2013 | Best of, The Replacements, vinyl records
It’s funny if you strictly go by what I’ve listened to the most this year The top 20 are mostly old bands that have been around for more than 10 plus years. My go to bands. Then again you have to consider on top of me living in a bubble there is a lot of crap out there that never get enough spins to show-up. We’ll try to give you play by play and list the top five here as scrobbled via desktop and now mobile. No Car plays or vinyl were accounted for Same old story but here are the release highlights of the best music of 2013.
THE REPLACEMENTS – SONGS FOR SLIM
01. I listened to The Replacements 178 times in the past 12 months. Obsessive maybe. Mostly probably due to the fact they played a couple shows over the summer. We’re always hopeful for a chance to see Paul and Tommy play together in New York but that is not happening yet. So we went back and listened to a bootleg Live at Maxwells that Captain’s Dead Posted. So for all intent and purposes this was our most popular band this year. In that mix was SLIM Benefit. Not sure it got as many plays but Westerberg can do no wrong. [BUY LP VERSION]
MY BLOODY VALENTINE – M V P
02. Next up with 168 plays is My Bloody Valentine. And you know what? We didn’t even get a chance to listen to their new one that much except for a few passes on the youtubes at first so these plays don’t even count that! it’s dreamy and Kevin Shields still makes music his band can barely perform live. Nice follow-up a couple eons later to loveless. You can’t go wrong with this album because he’s a master in the studio. Pricey though but kind of thing a audiophiles should invest in the vinyl version for bragging rights. [BUY MVP LP CD]
THE NIGHT MARCHERS – ALLEZ ALLEZ
03. On the other end of the rock guitar is old reliable JOhn Reis. He’s always going to use volume and atidude from the first note. If you love Hot Snakes and or Rocket From the Crypt. Then new Night Marchers album fits right in the middle of those two bands. Smack dab in fact. We’re leaning towards this over Obits because of his knack for a better hook in this round. This shit just rocks start with “Roll On”. [BUY NIGHT MARCHERS LP]
THE SADIES – INTERNAL SOUNDS
04. The brothers Dallas and Travis Good from The Sadies combine some of the best things from Country, Surf and Alternative jams. This is a super solid album. Earlier in the year we had a chance to catch them at Mercury Lounge when this record came out. They were amazing live band. Everything awesome you would expect from above genre influences. They are now influencers of taken something old and refashioning it into songs all their own.

05) CRIMINAL HYGENE – CRMNL HYGNE LP
Ok first off. This has gotten many more plays than Last.fm account would let you believe. Because we 1st streamed their shit on bandcamp.com. We dig this band’s style. We gushed when first listened back in January. So get with the program if you call yourself a indie rocker at all or forever please just kill the term. This is one of the genres only hopes. Because that keyboard and computer bullshit you listen to all the time sucks a big harry homeless person’s ass(no offense to homeless people). Anyway, if you ever heard the tune “go” by the replacements then you might dig the single of theirs called “rearrange me”. There is a feeling on every track for even the most jaded of mother fuckers. Sometimes a little out of tune but it’s ok this is only rock-n-roll.

VIDEO OF THE DAY: We like the foo fighter style nerd character thing in the storyline in this rock video co-direct by Slim Wray and Tamara Lee. Pretty funny situation comedy thing not to be undermined by the thick sounding rock duo that they actually are. All bands should have a sense of humor and not take themselves so seriously.
If we had to compare the voices on their debut Sack Lunch we could easily say Jim Morrison and not just because they included a Doorish sounding cover of Van Morrison’s tune “Gloria”. Definitely a southern accent kind of thing reliving the rockus days when tube amp rocknroll was the wild wild west. Which is basically what they are going for. We want to believe they are having a good time doing it. Which is not the usual sloppy mess duo’s get away with. The Jack White formula is fairly easy to follow for a bit.

COVERS: Today in the covers bin is a whole concept. A whole album in fact from front to back of the famous Beach Boys album Pet Sounds. Mint 400 Records presents bands like The Duke of Norfolk, Fairmont, Cropduster, Michael Ambrose, The One & Nines, The Ashes and The Multi-Purpose Solution doing different variations on some wonderful music. Which arguably are all one long song because the production uses similar tricks and vocals approaches it has this amazing sound all on it’s own. So it’s cool to see some bands attempting to repurpose and reconstruct the otherwise brilliant recording. Oh and the best part this shit is it’s free. So here’s a few choice tracks but let that stop you from enjoying the whole thing because the label is just making the whole thing completely free. nice right?
That’s Not Me MP3 by Cropduster
God Only Knows MP3 by Fairmont [Catch them live this Friday 12/19/13 w/ Eastern Anchors & Tri-State at Rent Party]

Getting the perfect gift is hard. I always struggle with what to get people but if I was buying stuff for myself. Here’s 10 things I would get for your significant other so you can come-off as cool.
10) Who does not like Pavement? Funny thing is these releases were more than likely originally purchased on CD. I’m sure they were available on CD but vinyl was not the thing in the 90’s for most major indie releases. [ From Insound ]
9) No big secret around here our sneaker of leisure are vans. In particular the slip on style. These are hands down the most comfortable sneakers ever invented. Not for crazy active sports. Good for skating and doing high-kicks on stage. [SHOP ON FANS]
8) Does your girlfriend kick you out of bed? Want to give her something cute? How about the Snore Stopper Boxing Glove available from FANCY?
7) Oh the irony of this Banksy Destroy Capitalism print. Which was just pulled from Walmart for copyright infringement. Or was it? Who knows. Not sure most hipsters would be able to swings $800. Much less $50. [slate] But a cool poster can be cool if you don’t have to live with it forever.
6) I’m fine tee. Shit I was shot bloody t-shirt screen print is the ultimate of bravado statements for your macho boyfriend. Funny at a whole new level from Fancy. $22
5) Coffee and game lovers behold Tetris mug! $13 + shipping. What? Also from Fancy.
4) For only $625 you too can ride in style from this Long Board from Tommy Bahama. Pretty Fancy. Walnut wingnut for wall street surfers. I really want this.
3) The evolution of the bike. Cool poster art that could live on once you move out of your apartment for $27.[fancy it]
2) This is probably my favorite low cost gift. It’s a spork! Yes a keychain too but you’ll never not have a spoon on hand or a fork. So no more wasted plastic so your loved one can decrease their carbon footprint. $15 [Fancy]
1) Get your own spy drone for cheap for $179 the HUBSAN X4 Quadcopter with FPV Camera. I want one of these. Not sure I can fly it around my neighborhood but how cool!

SINGLE OF THE DAY: People meet Tim Foljahn. If you don’t know him already know from his haunted past with doing Two Dollar Guitar with Steve Shelly from Sonic Youth or the myriad of other guitar work with Cat Power, to the noise of the Boredomes; he’s been there hacking away on six strings for a long time. He is the original slow guy of rock music bringing you something new on Kiam Records called “Bird” with backing vocals by Amy Bezunartea and Bass guitar and drums by Jeremy Wilms. Song written by Alexa Wilding. This new material will be available December 10, 2013. Is it a song about a bird or something else? You tell me. I think of it as the music behind the painting that watches you walk by. What is the art thinking or feeling exactly? This music is that feeling personified. His catalog is deep and full of slow jams like this so catch-up with Tim and his epic handle on sitars from his 2012 release Songs For An Age Of Extinction which we can only described it’s as if Nico was a strange man with a dark voice arising in a poppy field of mysterious dreams.

HOLIDAY SINGLES: We like holiday music around these parts. We scoffed in early November because it was just too early but now that the turkey has bought the farm. It’s on and time to annoy your co-workers! This new one is a great Christmas split stocking stuffer single via ample play records(UK)! Classic reverb drenching psych-rock with The Sudden Death of Stars on side A & the Beat Mark on side AA. “What is Winter Good for?” comes complete with a very groovy bass line and church bells. Sound very much early 60’s rock-n-roll in the vein of yardbirds. On the flip side sleigh bells get you in the mood for “Christmas Blossom” by Beat Mark. This will be be available Dec 9th.
BONUS:
If you enjoy classic big band sounds then Rory Partin featuring his wife Alexa James doing up the classic live “Baby It’s Cold Outside” might warm up your coal soaked heart. Yup fans of Frank and Harry Connick, Jr. will be humming this once again.

VIDEO OF THE DAY: Multi-instrumentalist dude Austin Hartley-Leonard may or may not be a serial killer hanging out on random street corners in LA. We don’t mean to make fun of dudes with three first names but just want to make sure we distinguish him from the pack of talented serial killers you may run into. Review Stalker presents Broken Anchor to you with this video of a very hot chick (Nicole Steinwedell) pretending to fight and do normal boyfriend/girlfriend stuff. He’s not exactly a country singer although he does have an ability to tell a good story lyrically with a soft serrated knife in his own hybrid alt-americana way. While we also don’t think he could pull off Gram Parsons Flying Burrito Brothers outfit (that would be too obvious if you ever saw the flick Mariachi) that we normally associate with serial singer songwriter types. He does sound similar to Gram. Austin’s music and voice is as smooth as a cello in heat and you should check it out on his full length called Fresh Lemonade to cool yourself off. Which is probably why the girl fell for him in the first place although we don’t know because it’s not a talkie. Go for a deep cut like “Head Is A Hole” and “My Marie”. The “Always” video is a good intro track to a nice solid and well produced release.
