Crop O’ Singles: From New York, Canada to Mass

Crop O’ Singles: From New York, Canada to Mass

Not Enough MP3 I’ve only seen J play solo once. actually i think there was violin player cranking on the distortion just as much as he was during the solo parts – the shit was loud. This is actually a complete acoustic album that is just as much Crosby Stills Nash & Young as it completely Mascis. He always had that southern thing in his voice even for a hippie from Mass, not to say he could not layer on electric guitar with his riffage. Here’s proof he doesn’t have to at all. Great shit. [Buy]

The Breakup MP3 The Rural Alberta Advantage from Departing. I went to see these Canadians at the Mercury awhile back. Totally great show. All the tracks I’ve heard from this record are consistent love songs of sort or another. For lack of a bass player this music is pretty full. Also check out “Two Lover” which reminds me very much of something off of In The Aeroplane, Over The Sea by Neutral Milk Hotel. [Buy]
Two Headed Boy MP3 by NMH
Two-Headed Coin MP3 by Obits Live at the Cake Shop 1/12/08

Vapor Transport System MP3 By the artist known as tymekz from vERTICAL eXIT 5 song ep. His music is foreign like the first time you heard radiohead get weird. It’s alien space trip hop with vats and vats of pharma and at the same time like puffy little clouds but with out the vocals getting in the way. If this music were a film it’s about space. [Get it here ]
Puffy Cloud MP3 by Ween from God Ween Satan the Oneness (Crank this because it’s recorded really really low)

Wreck and Reference the Black Cassette

Wreck and Reference the Black Cassette

MUSIC REVIEW: The music is so doom and gloom and lowly tuned it sounds like it’s distorted beyond recognition. Might be because my ears are really trashed or this Davis, California band Wreck and Reference actually recorded Black Cassette to tape. All good things with the proper hiss management and noise gates off. So imagine the slow drum thumping of Shellac’s 1,000 hurt’s scratchy guitars on “Prayer to God mixed” with the loneliness of Low and then you suddenly grind up the fader to the point it sounds like a septic tank truck is sucking the life out of you. Yup those are you guts and yes that metal ringing is what’s this band has documented on this chrome. Safe for generous use by fans of neurosis, melvins and unsane who like experimental metal.

Evening Redness MP3 by Wreck and Reference [Get Some]

Sorta sounds like:
Organ Donor MP3 by Unsane (Matador 1991)

The 60’s girl pop of The Like is back

The 60’s girl pop of The Like is back

Album Review: I am a little late to the game to this group but in the grand skeem of things not really because The Like is retro gal 60’s pop in the vain of She & Him via Downtown Records. Certainly paying great homage to the genre as this music borrows nicely from that whitegirl mo-town sound but without the bee-hive hair-dews. Honestly not much has changed but that is ok! They are just re-spinning but knowingly with the right twists, so it comes across as super fun peppy music relying more so on vocal hooks than guitars and some good bass riffs. I owe it (again) to Michael Shelly from WFMU for spinning their 2010 album Release Me on his show recently. There’s not a lot experimentation and the lack of women’s lib is not the point with this stuff. Music would be dead if the Spice Girls ever sounded like this so lets keep this as our little secret ok? This is more honest make-out music and totally empowered by their sharp feminine Brit accents. These are pretty sexy songs fit for any Russ Meyers films where girl trouble could mean a myriad of naughty things and maybe less fights but anyway here’s to my curator and me as yours. Enjoy The Like and some others for your girl’s mix below.

117 Seventeen Songs

Quickie Music Review: Seventeen(17) Maine Songs is music performed by Jersey indie rocker and multi-instrumentalists Ben Ross. He has a bunch of other projects of which this is the “pop” music. Reminds us of Matt Pond PA band and guitar jargon by Seam to give you the quick tour. Here’s a strong track ironically and subtly could actually cause somebody to give birth of some very strong offspring.

Irish Music of The Pogues & The Frames

Irish Music of The Pogues & The Frames

There are many many great bands that I’d say are truly Irish and tons of no name heroes who play the traditional stuff in pubs around world. Obviously there’s U2 but just as important to me are The Pogues and The Frames. Both of these bands embody some pretty stunning lyrics and music that really captures this culture of travelers along with the spirited charm of the Irish. Lets not forget songs about the green beer.

I remember seeing Glen Hansard the singer for The Frames play at this small gallery called Be in Asbury Park, NJ to about 50 people with all these other singer songwriters playing sets before he went on. Oh and by the way I used to hate this genre but seemed like a mellow evening. Mostly because I associated the genre to James Taylor (whole other story there). That is until I saw Glen perform. Holy Cow. On personality alone he’s a great Ambassador to his country on another note he embodies all this stuff I list above. He’s a meastro of his audience and makes some pretty dynamic music and to me I thought there was a whole band behind him when it was just him. Then you see his band (4 or 5 times over the years) and you understand this troubadour. You probably just know him from that Once movie with Marketa Irglova. Regardless if you ever get a chance go out of your way. Even if you only know a few songs he’ll have you singing songs; even ones you don’t know.

On the other end. What I always thought of with Irish bands were The Pogues. Smoking and drinking at the pub, dancing the ghig and good old fun until your liver gives out. The beauty beyond all these things have always been the lyrics and stories as sung by Shane Mcgowan. Lord knows you can’t understand them if they are not singing but it’s what makes these songs like living poems. Anyway here’s a a couple from each band. I think you know what U2 sounds like.

Sound Station Psych & funk Fallin’ Off The Reel

Record Collecting: Another journey to the Sound Station in Westfield another batch of scores all in one fell swoop!

Man I heart Truth and Soul records. Fallin’ Off The Reel III is a great archeological compilation with groovy space jams by Cosmic Force, the wah wah love of Timothy McNealy, and some truly great bass playing by Black Velvet. This shit is hotter than lava. Also on here is soul-tastic Lee Fields & Explorers. All the tracks are great if you want some funk/soul tasters. You should take a bite out of this one.

Red Rooster MP3 by El Michels Affair

If your a fan of this re-insurgence of psychedelic rock music of the Black Angels variety then you should pay attention to these Bay Area mystics and check out the space-outs music of Lumerians. All their jams occur on the far away planet of Transmalinnia which is like distorted pompeii keyboard trip that will make your eardrums vibrate. Except is one or two notches louder and could easily knock down any arena.

Third Man Rolling Record Store by Jack White

Third Man Rolling Record Store by Jack White

“A recent study shows that 97% of all High School students have never set foot inside a record store”

Thank you Third Man Records Jack White for this roving record machine. What a great idea to bring commerce back to the kids. I hope you stack more than just Third Man records in this roving mecca. Ok granted 85 releases in a couple short years ain’t no small change for any indie. Jesus that’s most label’s entire catalog! Ok, so maybe some curated selects would make this awesome idea even more awesome but hey who am I to even question or fathom one of the most prolific musicians of the past decade. First we had taco trucks and now this crazy yellow machine.

The fact that kids are robbed of the experience of hanging at record store blows my and is a major social crime and Jack’s taken action in this matter. The maiden voyage of the rolling record store is set and the vehicle will make an appearance at SXSW of course. So if your heading down to Austin watch-out for it.

Eastern Anchors Court Tavern w/ Wreaths + Zero for Conduct

Most cop cars are Crown Vics. Any kid could tell you this. You don’t drive unmarked one’s in bad neighborhoods without locking them up and driving one will give you a certain amount of highway respect – even if you are not a cop. Which makes it perfect fodder for a song title. That’s an easy bet. Here’a new song by Eastern Anchors which is every bit Chavez as it is HUM sounding. All good things for consumerists of the noisy rock variety. This Anchors song is stealth though like most cruisers with tinted windows and weird guitar tunings disguising itself as a good pop song once its intension are revealed. Check it out. Various other such musical crimes will be committed live this forth coming Friday night but you’ll need to attend in person to be a witness. Because the kids won’t say shit unless you put the cuffs on them.

WFMU 2011 Pledge drive is on!

WFMU 2011 Pledge drive is on!

I’ve been listening to WFMU since highschool and there has never been any shortage of original entertainment left of the dial on 91.1. from talking dial-in shows hosted by the likes of writer Tom Scharpling or 7 Second Delay where there is really no point other than asking people some mundane things for an hour. On the flip side I’ve discovered so much amazing music it’s even hard to fathom the audible experience without them anymore – trust me you won’t be able to keep up. So if yer some sort of hipster (you know what I’m talking about ) it’s worth the while to tune-in and dig into your pocket and give what you can. It’s the station that keeps on giving. I personally could wear a different WFMU T-shirt or bumper sticker every night of week for months (might need washin’) to get your attention. So the least I can do is turn you on to them and some of the cool schwagg you can get with a simple pledge. See it as a investment in the future of music. You’ll get much enjoyment anytime you may randomly tune in and not to mention that your modest donation can/will also be considered a tax right-off for your personal bail-out. Do it for Charlie Sheen’s Tiger blood if anything.

Here’s some past goodness you can expect:
Pillow Fight MP3 by Sloan live from Cherries Jubileeee!: Terre T’s Wfmu Marathon Premium 2009
Deltone Rock MP3 by Dick Dale from Michael Shelley presents Cut That Out!
I Should Have Known Better MP3 by The Skatelites Also from a Michael Shelly Cut that Out Vol1
Walk, Don’t Run MP3 by Herb Alpert & The Tijuana Brass from Cut That Out Vol 2!
I Shall Be Released (Bob Dylan cover) MP3 by Jeff Buckley Live over the phone jams with a band that is live in the studio. This is a classic example of what you get. If you’re not crying by the end you’re not human.

More sample pledge premiums on beware of the blog.

Crop o’ Singles: The Silver Age of Popsters

Crop o’ Singles: The Silver Age of Popsters

Here’s a few pop rock ditties and for some weird coincidence they almost all have album artwork that’s moslty silverish looking. Totally ironic or is there some computer color black and white virus I don’t know about? Did our ageless youth forget about color?
The Madison Square GardenersTeeth Of Champions
Best album title ever. In the first corner we bring you some alt-country that is as much like Tom Petty as it has some Stones /Black Crowe like impersonators from let it bleed Brooklyn U.S.A. playing on it. I tease as I really like this music being a closet alt-country fan and all. Actually what is really weird is that this music is what I really envision middle america sounding like if it were a island and they just kept reproducing. Classic keyboards and tiddy 3 part vocal harmonies with a track that talks about girls and that true love ain’t always “innocent” do remind me of Mr. Petty tonally and that Alice in Wonderland thing. You’ll see just listen in your ear holes.
Download: Innocent MP3

The Owsley BrothersSeparated At Birth
In the next corner actually hailing from Florida are these guys who create minimalistic bad livers acoustic-type black t-shirt rock. BRMC analogy in tack this is a schlitz crowd. To hell with your PBR that’s too high-brow. The Brothers hail from and offer many citrus flavored types of songs but this one is called “Under the Shade of a live Oak” is a very good place to start so long as you have your beverage. Full release coming this April or so we hear.

Jordan BoltonSilver Age EP
I like the play on words for the title on this one. Which acknowledges that the golden age of music is way dead and asks you to appreciate the new. Jordan is a 18 year old song writer from Manchester England, and I suspect laptop engineer; who writes some bass driven tunes where he then layers on keys and light guitar work around his melodies. Basic formula that works really because of it’s simplicity and by Cobain’s sake he was born in the 90’s! His singing reminds me of mix between Pete Yorn and Robert Smith. He’s going to be one to watch. Check him out.
Download: Black And Grey MP3

The Nico BluesBlame The Boredom, Blame the Basements Ok if there were a Oscar for one of them talkies with color for best little short indie band video these guys should win. Even if James Franco is a tool. I’m not sure he will never live that performance down but all the rock music on this one is memorable like that first time you got some – here’s the video interweb single and number one hit “Living Proof”. Enjoy a healthy blast of guitar parts, sing along parts and big drum bangin’ parts. This collection of rock guilt will give you a swath of good times and far from that sloppy seconds feeling as this one is totally a FREE album download –dude. Why pay if you get the marketing KY-Jelly for Free? If you like that friendly Tape n’ Tapes vibe, the geeky-ness of weezer and something for the Bros’ who dig the Pixies. Then these songs will play nice in your Prius.
