Now this is a protest song featuring all sorts of riot mayhem, police and anonymous action by the band Atari Teenage Riot. ATR wants you to lip sync to this tune and film yourself doing it with a black flag in the background. No not Rollin’s and Ginn’s Black Flag logo. A solid black one like the illustration above. A sure fire way of getting on a watch list so be sure to wear a mask with the mouth cut-out at least. Make sure to look angry and sinister! Atari Teenage Riot – Black Flags (feat. Boots Riley) by Alec Empire/ ATR
Songs about the color black: TV Party MP3 by Black Flag – Probably one of greatest songs about complacency my dear sheeple. Flat Black MP3 by True Widow. Make sure it’s not a glossy black but something rebellious and ominous looking. Thin Black Sail MP3 by British Sea Power from Valhalla Dancehall (2011) Black Window MP3 by The Nico Blues from their EP Color Me Black and White MP3 by Night Surgeon from Day For Night (2011) Black Diamond MP3 by The Replacements from Let it be (1984)- Probably the best kiss cover ever. Black Satin MP3 by The Raveonettes from Lust Lust Lust (2007) if your classy though and have black sexy sheets. Why not!?
Just in time for you to carve up turkey the classic Guided By Voice’s line-up of Robert Pollard, Mitch Mitchell, Kevin Fennell, Tobin Sprout, Greg Demos and Jimmy Pollard will have a 7″ with 5 songs on Fire Records. So get prepared for the domestic release coming November 28, 2011. Christmas will be here early kids. The classic cover art already sold me the song. If your a fan of the early off-the-cuff song styles you’ll love this single! I wonder how short the 4 songs on the B side will really be? Here’s some old classic shorties. What’s your favorite short song? I always thought of them as interludes or intros sometimes because it was the set-up for the “hit”.
Cigarette Tricks MP3 from Alien Lanes(1995) clocking in a :14 seconds! Hit MP3 or this one at :23! hollow cheek MP3 from Mag Earwhig!(1997) :33 more than half a minute! Kicker of Elves MP3 from Bee Thousand. (1994) This is my fave of these short ones even though it epically comes at over a minute at and six seconds. It’s perfect.
ALBUM REVIEW: So if you’re a ex-metal head what do you do after lighting strikes you and you are enlightened? One thing is you make a record called we are night sky and you call the band deadboy & the Elephantmen. The main dude Dax Riggs (what rock minikor) was in the slowcore metal band Acid Bath and the rock anthem group Agents of Oblivion before deadboy came together. However, the metamorphosis happened we don’t care because this is a great heaven and hell themed record that marks this dark line in the sky. Ok maybe we do care because the transformation is an exploration from something sinister to something dark and deeper. Which has moments in the music when it’s a curious brew of Craig Wedren’s Shudder to Think like dischordant indie rock, Jack White’s rock-n-roll parts and the folk spice of Jeff Magnum all in one scary fucked-up dream. I’ll admit it. I don’t know jack shit but yesterday I was in the Sound Station in New Jersey and Bob was spinning this record and it it immediately caught my ear. The guitar tones were just right and I picked it right up. Released officially via Fat Possum Records way back in 2006. This is a record worth revisiting if you’ve never heard it. Highly recommended with 5 upside down crosses all the way through and I can rarely say that. Seriously. Even though this band is out of commission you should add this piece of music to your permanent record/cd collection. There one acoustic things on here called “No Rainbow” certainly could be considered direct lift from On the Aeroplane Over the Sea , other time they even borrows from Mick Jagger with the sung melody parts. These songwriting tactics are all good because the music is killer and because a well borrowed hook that is nicely interwoven is really in my heart a homage to something great. ☩ ☩ ☩ ☩ ☩ Enjoy!
Evil Friend MP3 by deadboy & the elephantmen (2005) Dr. Seuss Is Dead MP3 by Acid Bath from When the kite strings pop (1994). Fantastic slowcore metal outfit. Nasty and evil. Dead Girl MP3 by Agents of Oblivion s/t (2000) The Terrors of Nightlife MP3 by Dax Riggs from We Sing of Only Blood or Love (2007). This particular track is more inline with deadboy which subtly reminds me of Danger Mouse and Sparklehorse’s album with David Lynch, Dark Night of the Soul.
Bonus songs: Revenge MP3 by Sparkle Horse & Dangermouse from Dark Night of Soul featuring your favorite Halloween friend Wayne Coyne. Crush You MP3 by Craig Wedren from his new one called Wand (2011). This is classic Shudder to Think in my humble opinion. Another find from the Sound Station yesterday. Otherwise I would have no clue it was out. Still listening. Watch out for the review! Hit Liquor MP3 by Shudder To Think from Pony Express (1994) Wishing He Was Dead MP3 by The Like from Release Me (2010). Girl pop with a 60’s vibe created in this decade.
Here are some scary songs for Halloween along with a mash-ups to go with it to scare up your playlist.
Mladek MP3 by Russian Circles from their record Empros – Slam jammer with a slayer and explosions in the sky tilt. You can hear Jason creeping around on this one. Does not get scarier than this.
The Monster Mash MP3 by Bobby Pickett – A classic oldie but goody.
Starting this Friday Octo 28th through Sunday the 30th at the Metropolitan Pavilion in Manhattan (125 W. 18th St) WFMU is hosting their annual Record Fair. It’s been an amazing trip to see all sorts of young folks thinking it’s cool to own a piece of music and not just digital copy. All weekend they will be spinning 45’s and featuring the recent Italian documentary Vinylmania by Director Paolo Campana. I hope to attend on Friday to rummage the crates of records. A bunch of bands will be playing like The Black Hollies and Sediment Club. This is a real NY experience so if you’ve never gone before and you’re going to be in the city put it on your agenda. Dust off that turn table . While you are chewing on this also think that you will be supporting the station that gives you most by being totally comercial free. Sp consider giving them a spin and a pledge of support. They do great things for a free form spirit and bring you programming like none other on the planet. oh and they plays songs.
Run With Me Run MP3 by The Black Hollies from Softly Towards The Light (2009)
Cooking Cherries 2011
Lollipop MP3 by Nimbus on BASF 7″ Germany (1971). This track is from a 31 song marathon DJ premium from Terre T who is just one of the amazing nutball DJs on WFMU who go through the stax to bring you amazing obscure punk and rarities. This particular comp has somewhat delicious food themes.
Light Sweet Crude MP3 by Obits live on Evan Funk Davies Show (4/21/2009)
Here’s a couple random finds from my local jersey shop the Sound Station. Bold Soul Sister, Bold Soul Brother MP3 by Black on White Affair from this great comp Wheedle’s Groove – Seattle’s Finest In Funk & Soul 1965-75. Tameyawt MP3 by Tinariwen from Tassili. This has some of the TV on the radio guys. It’s sung in a african dialec. Has a Nick Drake feel.
SINGLE REVIEW: This is going to be quick, easy and painless for you psych rock fans. Actually you may have never heard of them until now but I think you owe yourself this if you’re a Black Angels fan to check this groovy band out. New Animal are from Atlanta, Georgia which is basically two guys Kris Hermstad and Derek Burdette, actually now I think they have fired their drum machine and have a drummer to drag on stage. Which is the only respectable thing to do. What may have started off as a bed room recording experiment is now evolving into this dream like pyche-pop drenched in reverb and delay. I’m always amazed with this genre of music being re-invented by groups like this one. The burning in your ears will be akin to a suicide girls pin-up. They have built dreamscapes from their first release to this recent single. The good thing for you my dears fans is they have a new record in the works. So much to look forward to. So if you are down south check them out live in November playing with Purity Ring on (11/2) and Architecture in Helsinki (11/12). Details on their bookface.
Something about this bands sound man: Winter ’68 MP3 by The Black Angels from EP (2005) The Illiad MP3 by Tapes and Tapes from The Loon (2006) Roller Coaster MP3 from The Psychedelic Sounds ofThe 13th Floor Elevators (1966)
Move it a long my dear protestors this is a real insurgency. Every month we smash or trash some songs and then let you grab the spoils. There would be busted and bruised ego’s if you heard us in the board room throwing darts at some of the music that does not make the cut. For the record all bribes are accepted as there is no real formal process other than sending us a downloadable link for your latest and greatest track. We think these are number one hits in their own rights but do feel free to follow the unedited Review Stalkernoise on the twitters. Enjoy!
Love Teeth MP3 by Drew Smith. We’ll start you out on a slow burn jam which comes with a nicely illustrated collage video. This would also be a great song for a endtro-intro to a film or HBO series like Big Love because the string orchestration draws you in while still remaining at it’s core a decent hip alternative thing going on versus some of that Dave Mathews junk. Drew has a vibe which is reminiscent of Matt Pond PA so if you are fans check him out.
Backroom Darlings MP3 by Femme Fatality from That’s It, Thar’a It.This one is big fuzzy electro disco assault where any thing can happen in the backroom of the green room of the club. Girls sleeping with dogs and guys crossing over to the other side. It’s a trashy sordid affair. We really can’t tell who is into what these days but this music should make any hipster make crazy whoopie sounds. Think The Faint using the tools Kraftwork taught them to use for backroom concert fan situations via www.stickfigurerecordings.com
Diving Bell MP3 by Brown Shoe from The Gift Horse. This is some pretty boy rock music with some of the singing done in a falsetto voice that whisks then it rocks out a bit. The marching band snare drum shuffle moves this along like a rolling wave of underwater seaweed being run over by a lawnmower. Whatever that means we give you this band’s song because it’s good. Get the rest of The Gift Horse manscape on Brown Shoe’s band camp page.
So this week one of New York’s premier guitar bands Chavez did yet another performance except this time on Jimmy Fallon. This is about a week after playing All Tomorrow’s Parties. Now that their songs are at least 16 years old can we help pass the good vibes to hear some new material sometime soon from these gentlemen? I know it’s in their back pocket somewhere. I know I’m not the only one who cares from everybody who showed up to see them play a 6:30 set! They sounded great and Matt Sweeney looks like he rolled right out of CB’s circa 1989 from his Skunk days except with no dread locks but probably the same jeans. Clay was in post-hardcore sound band called Bullet LaVolta before forming the band with Sweeney who were releasing records at the same time and part of the same scene which included Smashing Pumpkins in their circuit. And if you listen carefully you’ll notice Billy Corrigan pretty much ripped off both band’s sounds and mashed them together. In my opinion anyway; if you take that Allmam brother 70’s guitar noodling of Skunk and add some Tarver power chords with the volume formula breakdowns. You can easily look at both of these bands as being influential with one of the three making all the spoils.
The Fist of Tarver & the Men of Chavez - All Tomorrow's Parties 2011
Nailed To The Blank Spot MP3 by Chavez from Gone Glimmering (1995) (There’ll Be Other Girls) Hoss MP3 by Skunk from Last American Virgin(1989) Knobb Off MP3 by Skunk from the album Laid (1991) Twin/Tone X-Fire MP3 by Bullet LaVolta from The Gift (1989) My Protector MP3 by Bullet LaVolta from Swandive (1991) Siva MP3 by Smashing Pumpkins from Gish (1991)
Lets look at the facts. Ministry’s – The Land of Rape & Honey came out 23 years ago today. The governmant has given away trillions of dollars to the banks. So much so they might as well had given each of US born Americans 50 thousand each. We’ll never see it and somehow we’ll be paying for that as the dept grows day by day. Billion and billions. That’s sort of like rape or the gift that keeps giving — ain’t it? The best part about industrial music is that it’s relentless. There is a punishment. A Pounding drive your soul to this dark side. Disturbing sounds relentlessly are measures of music mess with your guts. Make you question your sanity. Your ears bleed when it’s good. Your body is taken over by satan or some dark figure wearing leather. You’re haunted and entranced at the same time by the bass which threads your mind all together with visions you know are wrong. Copulation with sewn-up wounds somehow sound appealing and the norm in this world is taking everything to the edge.
If you like this noise you like this other noise: Hit by a Machine | Dogsbodycorpsegas MP3’s by Transilvia from Imaginary Midgets – Lots of distorted bass and magnetic inspired guitar tones. These guys were New Brunswick faves until they moved to the City of Angels. The Power Of Independent Trucking MP3 by Big Black from Songs About Fucking (1987) Dream Long Dead MP3 by Godflesh from Streetcleaner (1989) Mercy MP3 by KMFDM from Symbols (1997)
“It is not because things are difficult that we do not dare; it is because we do not dare that they are difficult.” -Seneca
I was wondering that there really are no new and worthy protest songs these days. It was cool that Jeff Magnum used the Wall Street Protest as a platform to make for a good street acoustic performance but really there is no new content to speak of. Ken Kesey, Joe Strummer, U2 and REM said their thing decades ago. So it seems that protesting is for people who don’t work (can I protest that too? ). I know that they more than likely are students or don’t have jobs for one reason or another but considering how fast the social media pace works who knows if we’ll ever hear a good protest song. The messages are mixed and are quickly being simplified into a media meme. Airline pilots and unions are taking the opportunity to revitalize their platforms and take stand against the very reason they should exist. “Shit the government should be able to balance a fucking check-book right” said one angry black man in a viral video I saw. A blessing really that this small army of individuals decided to take a stand because there is a reason we don’t put regular Joe’s in charge of the masses but then again we elected one and he’s been getting crush by perception. Really a big challenge considering we’ve let the financial system of lobbyist be in control for quite some time. Our “leaders” have been letting the people get ripped-off for quite sometime so it’s really a matter of time before our blood runs out or has it already? I think the transfusion is over and this is the tipping point. There are things you while being inspired by music that you can do. Maybe something as simple as switching your money from one of the big four banks to a smaller local bank so you don’t incur a service fee to keep more some of your money or live by cash and not use the convenience of credit cards. Buy what you can truly afford to buy. Although I would like to error on the side of some guy yelling at me with me a megaphone to be complacent. The actions can be subtle. One tactic that might work my dear sheeple is to just do something in your own private way is the point. I mean seriously when is the last time you gave a cop a hug or gave a complete stranger a random act of kindness. I think we just all really want the opportunity to have the things we want but without rules that govern those that have everything. How can we all exist is metaphorical slaves of the machine? This is a class war and the ironic part is that those with very little think they are one of them and that’s just shows you how stupid the masses can be convinced by things that don’t matter in the end.
