Feb Crop O’ Singles for Lovers 2012!

So much pop indie rock this month we don’t know what to do with ourselves. We love our inbox so keep the music coming. Here’s a few bands from Washington DC, Brooklyn, Florida, to Hampshire, UK.

Access Royale City of Paradigm This first one is a good song to open up our singles with by Access Royale. Cool little guitars, keyboard and bass interplay that tweeters and draws you in like a puzzle made out of musical notes. Think Dismemberment Plan and Bloc Party. Yup Access Royale are from DC so the proverbial chord changes do not fall far from the tree. Definitively one to watch!

Owsley Brother Single review We dig this psych noise from The Owsley Brothers. They are regular joes making a fuckin’ ruckus. Here’s a reverb drenched tune called “Rotten on the Vine” from their forthcoming record called Cobalt due out March 6th. You know that neo-bluegrass music you hear in True Blood. This is that type of swamp psychedelic blues. You’re not quite sure but there is this Cramps like jungle beat bumping you for ride on their pick-up truck with song scary sounding guitars. This scene might not end because the vampires have skills but it does because you certainly want to hear the flip side which is equally garage and dirty south like R.L. Burnside.

Cities of Glass From where We Are Review Here’s a Cities of Glass from Hampshire, UK who single starts out a little proggy and notey called “Expect Less” from their EP From Where We Are. The vocal doubling is the strong part here as the music marches on and guitar notes twist you up like a vine. This tune swings and we can see the kids bopping their head along. Maybe even uncrossing their arms! Very agree-able like early We Were Promised Jet Packs so enjoy it!

Fort Lean Sunsick Single I really like the way the drums start pounding on this track one way then the bass goes another way on the third pass. Fort Lean are from Brooklyn. Lots of drums then towards the middle of the song after the guitar bridge they suddenly remind me of The Strokes. Except with delay on the guitars and little spattering of keywords or something like echo and the bunnymen. Catch them at Santos House Party Feb 28th w/ Team Spirit & Stepdad.

Here’s a few pop rock ditties and for some weird coincidence they almost all have album artwork that’s moslty silverish looking. Totally ironic or is there some computer color black and white virus I don’t know about? Did our ageless youth forget about color?
The Madison Square GardenersTeeth Of Champions
Best album title ever. In the first corner we bring you some alt-country that is as much like Tom Petty as it has some Stones /Black Crowe like impersonators from let it bleed Brooklyn U.S.A. playing on it. I tease as I really like this music being a closet alt-country fan and all. Actually what is really weird is that this music is what I really envision middle america sounding like if it were a island and they just kept reproducing. Classic keyboards and tiddy 3 part vocal harmonies with a track that talks about girls and that true love ain’t always “innocent” do remind me of Mr. Petty tonally and that Alice in Wonderland thing. You’ll see just listen in your ear holes.

The Owsley BrothersSeparated At Birth
In the next corner actually hailing from Florida are these guys who create minimalistic bad livers acoustic-type black t-shirt rock. BRMC analogy in tack this is a schlitz crowd. To hell with your PBR that’s too high-brow. The Brothers hail from and offer many citrus flavored types of songs but this one is called “Under the Shade of a live Oak” is a very good place to start so long as you have your beverage. Full release coming this April or so we hear.

Jordan BoltonSilver Age EP
I like the play on words for the title on this one. Which acknowledges that the golden age of music is way dead and asks you to appreciate the new. Jordan is a 18 year old song writer from Manchester England, and I suspect laptop engineer; who writes some bass driven tunes where he then layers on keys and light guitar work around his melodies. Basic formula that works really because of it’s simplicity and by Cobain’s sake he was born in the 90’s! His singing reminds me of mix between Pete Yorn and Robert Smith. He’s going to be one to watch. Check him out.

The Nico BluesBlame The Boredom, Blame the Basements Ok if there were a Oscar for one of them talkies with color for best little short indie band video these guys should win. Even if James Franco is a tool. I’m not sure he will never live that performance down but all the rock music on this one is memorable like that first time you got some – here’s the video interweb single and number one hit “Living Proof”. Enjoy a healthy blast of guitar parts, sing along parts and big drum bangin’ parts. This collection of rock guilt will give you a swath of good times and far from that sloppy seconds feeling as this one is totally a FREE album download –dude. Why pay if you get the marketing KY-Jelly for Free? If you like that friendly Tape n’ Tapes vibe, the geeky-ness of weezer and something for the Bros’ who dig the Pixies. Then these songs will play nice in your Prius.
