The Black Angels Evil Things – evil single

The Black Angels Evil Things – evil single

Black Angels Indigo Meadow
SINGLE REVIEW: This is a band who knows pych. They have jammed with the masters in order to pursue their new single “Evil Things” off of their coming record Indigo Meadow is a head banger. No doubt you should prepare yourself for the drop on April 2nd. Take your vitamins and get ready to take a long dark and dang trip. The keyboards are so Doorsey when they creep in.

New Animal Psych Rock
SINGLE REVIEW: This is going to be quick, easy and painless for you psych rock fans. Actually you may have never heard of them until now but I think you owe yourself this if you’re a Black Angels fan to check this groovy band out. New Animal are from Atlanta, Georgia which is basically two guys Kris Hermstad and Derek Burdette, actually now I think they have fired their drum machine and have a drummer to drag on stage. Which is the only respectable thing to do. What may have started off as a bed room recording experiment is now evolving into this dream like pyche-pop drenched in reverb and delay. I’m always amazed with this genre of music being re-invented by groups like this one. The burning in your ears will be akin to a suicide girls pin-up. They have built dreamscapes from their first release to this recent single. The good thing for you my dears fans is they have a new record in the works. So much to look forward to. So if you are down south check them out live in November playing with Purity Ring on (11/2) and Architecture in Helsinki (11/12). Details on their bookface.

Playlist – Songs about Water, Devastation & Rain

Playlist – Songs about Water, Devastation & Rain

Hurricane Irene Space photo music playlist We won’t call out some of the obvious one’s in this playlist but we will say this weather channel business is really put the scare in the upper North East. The sheer scale of it has people literally running for the hills to seek higher ground. Anyway this play list goes out to user @daanvanrossum because he asked me what was on my Hurricane playlist and i just told him Idaho’s You Were A Dick was a good rain record and walked away. That was sort of rude but I told him I’d work on it so here it is.

01: Impaler MP3 by Idaho from You Were A Dick (2011)

02: Turn On The Water MP3 by The Afghan Whigs from Congregation (1992)

03: Ocean Rain MP3 by Echo & The Bunnymen title track (1984). Seven Seas on this record is also an amazing song.

04: Thunderstorm MP3 By Buzzkill (NJ) from I Feel Like Myself Again (1994) – Classic debut track from New Brunswick college rock punks who later ended up with releases on Alternative Tentacles.

05: The Sea Is She b/w Water Is Better MP3’s by Bubble/Gum s/t (2004) – Great Jersey Shore duo. If you download anything you never heard of before make it these two tracks from their debut recorded at Technical Ecstasy by Chris Gobo Pierce from Doc Hopper. They were truly a awesome short lived band – like the kin of Pavement & Dinosaur Jr which Gobo the punk rock clown captured beautifully.

06: Tread Water MP3 by De La Soul from 3 Feet High & Rising (1989)

07: Treading Water MP3 by Nada Surf from Let Go (2002)

08: Smoke On The Water MP3 Cover by Pat Boone from In A Metal Mood No More Mr. Nice Guy. (1989). This record is a classic collection of big band interpretation. Freak out your friends and slide this in the playlist.

09: Ship Of Fools MP3 by Fucked Up from David Comes to Life (2011)

10: Surf City (revisited) MP3 by Black Angels from Exit EP / Another Nice Pair (2011) This is no Surfin Bird but it’s dark, slow and evil rock so pretty much the opposite.

11: Wet Work MP3 by Q and Not U from Power (2004)- “Keep splashing in the wet work wet work, so they can cash in on the network network” Great buzzy keyboard groove bass part on this one.

12: End Of Days MP3 by Black Wine – From Summer of Indifference (2011) If you like All/Decendents type thumbing & bumping rock. Check this Jersey band out.

13: The World (Is Going Up In Flames) MP3 by Charles Bradley Featuring The Menahan Street Band from No Time For Dreaming (2011) This is new soul and it sounds like old soul. Amazing shit.

Lucky 13 of the Best Albums of 2010 – Part I

Lucky 13 of the Best Albums of 2010 – Part I

Welcome, here’s the first 7 of my best of lucky 13 albums for 2010. I’m breaking it up so you get a chance to listen to this first batch. Lots of albums will be in a different list all their own like No Age, She & Him II, and Superchunk just to keep you guessing. Although great bands they did not make it to this particular list. Here’s the review stalker guidelines for selecting this years list. Pretty general stuff but anyway. Enjoy!
Rule: 1 Don’t stick to any one sub-genre if you can help it although you like what you like.
Rule: 2 These are albums not hit songs or singles although a good album has stand-out tracks it needs songs around them that make sense so the record needs to gel from the beginning to end. One song does not an album make unless it’s a amazing song.
Rule: 3 Just because a band made great record in the past doesn’t automatically qualify them. Although if it’s kind to your ears for reason you can’t explain put it on the list!
Rule: 4 These are not Grammys so don’t make obvious choices mix and shake it up some variety. Not even easy as a guideline unless it’s a specific black metal list.
Rule: 5 Listen with your ears on and check out these songs if you’re not familiar with them already. Make a mix and share it with your friends. Then go support the bands you like and buy their music you cheap ass. That’s the point.

The Soft Pack

The Soft Pack via Kemado Records

13) The Soft PackSelf Titled
This band used to be called The Muslims and not sure why they changed their name to something more PC. Sort of lame but whatever. My friend Albie turned me on to them and just based on this song alone they made it to my best of list. I don’t know a whole hell of a lot about them other than they know how to compose a good rock song or two. See I’m breaking my own rules already.

The Hold Steady

The Hold Steady - Heaven is Whenever

12) The Hold SteadyHeaven Is Whenever
This is their Let it Bleed. This is band knows how to lay it down and are relentless despite the departure of their keyboard player, the rhythm section, the solos are right in the sweet spot, and big rock ideals make every track a keeper. Singing songs about girls and drinking doesn’t get any better than this. Shit there are only four chords anyway.
Listen: The Weekenders MP3 [Buy]

Nada Surf if I had a hi-fi

Nada Surf - If I Had a Hi-Fi

11) Nada SurfIf I Had A Hi-Fi
This is a cover Album. Wait what? Yeah and you know what it’s awesome all the way through. Every song sounds like it could be a Nada Surf song. They are songs that have inspired them or they inspired it seems to me. It’s confusing but hot damn they do everything justice. It’s a first here for sure. Here’s our review with all the original versions of the songs(almost).

Listen: Electrocution MP3 [Buy]

Black Angels Phospene Dream

The Black Angels - Phospene Dream

10) The Black AngelsPhosphene Dream
Psychedelic or Psych or voodoo rock. This record is huge. The sound track for a all out acid war. Picture tar pits burning and people running around naked like a scene out of True Blood. That’s track 1 and it just gets wilder from there. These are images this music conjures up. A little Jim Morrison a little led zeppelin. This stuff is huge and simple at the same time.
Listen: Telephone MP3 [Buy]

The Fall

The Fall - Your Future Our Clutter

9) The Fall Your Future Our Clutter
Mark E. Smith is the grand creator of alternative punk among the best of the . A constant artist who keeps moving The Fall’s music even it should not be moved. His place in history was chiseled and yet he chooses to take the same old atonal ingredients using keyboards, drums, and bass bulldoze over his own castle and fill it with more crazy moaning alchemy. Great noise.
Listen: Hot Cake [Buy]

Sweet Apple

Sweet Apple Love & Desperation

8 ) Sweet AppleLove & Desperation
Lots of big rock jams on here of the kind pot smoking variety. Another big rock entry on this best of list. Besides the fact it has variable rock star weight this is great. That’s all.
Listen: Flying Up A Mountain MP3 [Buy]

Black Rebel Motorcycle Club - Beat The Devil's Tattoo

7)Black Rebel Motorcycle ClubBeat The Devil’s Tattoo
This is southern black magic. This shit rocks hard and is relentlessly distorted with creepy church organs. I like them so much because they remind of the american version of The Jesus and Mary Chain sometimes. All the guitars sound great and fills a huge space.

ALBUM REVIEW: Working too much. Too tired to write or listen to music most of the time. I am so pathetic but i did just manage to pick-up Phosphene Dream by The Black Angels. It’s killer psych and i am willing to sacrifice my will.

This is music without the need for acid and the hang-over. [Insert pot reference here] All of it is in here though with the audio experience via tremolo and lots of reverb and stereo panning. Better and bigger than Passover but just as trippy with citar riffs and puffy clouds of dust. Psychedelic slow rock for your dreams. I saw them play during the day time at the All Points West fest and was impressed. This music is better suited for a Apocalypse Now type soundtrack as it floats you down a river of chaos. The track “Telephone” is the only odd ball throwback on here in a jonestown massacre kind of way. I swear it’s a Kinks or Zombies cover. All the tracks are great though and worth a careful listen.

More music like this shit:
The Innerspeaker of Tame Impala This is also on my top ten list for 2010.
