Lightouts The Eloise Suite Single Review

Lightouts – Have consistently been delivering flaming gong rock-n-roll at such a steady pace we’ve been happy to be at the listening end each ime. I don’t know why other bands don’t do it this way by releasing 2-3 songs at a time is the perfect cadence to saunter and appear yet again for a third time on the RS blog! The Eloise Suite the “A” side rock fire-stomper is reason enough to grab your chick and shake your hips and swill some PBRs but the real motivator that should peak your curiosity is the closer. “All I Want / Heroes which is a LCD Soundsystem & David Bowie cover packed into one song. The artwork series is pretty cool too! I hope they actually print and produce some of these. I would surely had noticed them in the bins.

Next up is Knifey Spooney from Oakland California. Here’s a actual 7″ that’s available as 00 and 11’s for you to grab here if your’re into real quirky rocknroll chordage. “Art for Show Press pass” is sloppy like Sorry Ma’ and fun like The Raging Lamos which is a odd reference just for the old Jersey Court Tavern crowd who will know exactly what I’m talking about. This is fun like a fast version of Black Diamond and a little sloppy version of the Melvins. OK a couple references for you in one paragraph should be motivation enough.

The Perms High School High Single Review A little bit like Cheap Trick and The Knack combined in what is a band known as The Perms because it’s totally ok if you want to party all night staying up late watching The Legend of Billie Jean and drinking Dr. Peppers. Oh now that you have this 70-80’s hair image planked in your head with the 101 rock rhymes you’ll probably enjoy the straightforward nature of this band. Nothing too deep it’s just a good rock song kids by a trio of Canadians. Get with their 5th album coming out this month called Sofia Nights.

Long band names scare me but not so much these days. Here’s a beautiful light shoegaze dream-pop band called Letting Up Despite Great Faults. “Teenage Tide” reminds me of Lush dark bits of The Ravenettes with their whispy reverb drenched moments making peppering of subtle feedback which makes for an incredibly & unmistakably catchy song. More of this secret formula can be found via their record Paper Crush.

ok if you spun some pavement delivery and the concrete soundscapes that i love by grandaddy with a UK band shoegaze outfit fit to support Manchester flower power scene they would sound like Silence Rises. This may have been their game-plan developed in the boardroom of some dank rehearsal space and I would have told you I have reservations because the groups name sounds like the name of a Emo band but in the end the creative department would be right and I’d be wiser after a good listen to the full track. Throw down some Radiohead Bends era inspired guitar power and “Shallow Water” will help you get your rocks-off. Blues for a Dead Lover would be the case study for a well delivered execution.

He’s a Whore MP3 by Cheap Trick (1977)

The Girls of the Underground Attack! Part I

The Girls of the Underground Attack! Part I

This is no way a complete list of alternative underground female singers. Not even close to a short artist list either. Lets call it the first entry. Mostly independent non-super-star artists who have stamp their name clearly in underground music. We’ll have to revisit for sure as this always part of the music discovery process. Mostly obvious choice with some new faces which is awesome to see and hear.

Liz Phair from a recent show at Maxwells doing the teenage dream song “fuck and run” because she was much better than that and she didn’t think it would happen again. Even with her best intentions Liz is still rocking, even panned for some time for joining in the majors she is a true heroin as she was not addicted to substance like a lot of her contemporaries. This mommy rocks and has a lot of fun doing it. She empowered a lot of women with the lyrics on Exile In Guyville and some of the fruits are starting to become apparent.

You Should Know Me MP3 from her new one Funstyle

Big Eyes – songwise I actually like this punkband better than Screaming Females for some reason because they remind me of songsters The Muffs a lot in their simple delivery -SF are still a powerhouse. Please don’t get me wrong Marissa Paternoster rocks and her solo no-fi effort called Noun is pretty cool too. Big Eyes have apparent melodies delivered in a pop-punk style though which pushes them out of indie ghetto. So super excited to see what comes next. Here’s a young Kate Eldridge doing “Since You Left” on the little video show If You Make it. She’s one to watch. Debut full length coming this for her band this coming May on DonGiovani Records.

Outerspace MP3 by Noun [Buy] features Marissa Paternoster solo from Screaming Females w/ Miranda of Full of Fancy. Another killer track done with a piano is “Call Earth” — get it from [Buy]

Last one: Here’s a song by the California band The Muffs which is led by Kim Shattuck. They spent some time on Warner Brothers right out of the gate in with a single or two on Subpop. They are still playing with a recent reissue release with some extra bonus B-side called Kaboodle. She knows how to use a distortion pedal and is not afraid to use it. Check out the muffs blog.

SOMETHING EXTRA:
Big Eyes MP3 by Cheap Trick from the In Color Albini mix and recordings. Obviously not a gal band but love the homage to this song. If indeed they named the band after the song. [Buy Some Cheap Trick] You deserve it.

A Midnight Spin RocknRoll Mojo story

A Midnight Spin RocknRoll Mojo story

MUSIC REVIEW: Putting hair on a band based out of Brooklyn that sounds like a real rock band is not so difficult. I’m personally tired of bands with headbands and mustaches. That’s so 2010 on the bad breath-o-meter. Give me regular dudes who make music with a tight rythem section and a singer who has some British swagger although from North America and can hit some notes alla Robin Zander (Cheap Trick) on vocals any day and we’re in good shape. A sense of humor is optional at that point but sticking with any carny’s breakfast heroes storyline protects the Mojo community pretty well. Add some milk and Jack Pot, Chocferatu, Anton Tigrrre, Admiral Munch and Tweaks Bunny will tell you a story that will go on in infamy. So, here’s a concept video that came about after Jim the guitarist for Midnight Spin saw a mural in Williamsburg of cereal mascots decked out like murderous villains (You know like serial killers with a itchy trigger finger) with some help from Model Citizen Productions; whoala a rock crime caper video right of the box for their debut EP Through the Mojo Wire. Nice start for a new band as they prepare for their first tour and figure out how to keep gas in the van. The bass riffs on “Brooklyn’s Weary” and “Mr. Slate” have this cool distorted thing going on too as John Paul Jones is my witness. In fact the whole EP has charms that are worth chewing on. The Rivers Cuomo rock-n-roll mojo fan club is proud.

The band formed around 07 with some parts Boston and DC to solidify the line-up and your usual craig’s list nightmare auditions. It’s short and sweet and not a clunker to be had. Thus a EP you can take for a drive. Who wants filler anyway unless it’s in a donut? File under: Alternative rock with just enough grit and bounce to make the girls dance. Check them out!
