Sound Station Psych & funk Fallin’ Off The Reel

Record Collecting: Another journey to the Sound Station in Westfield another batch of scores all in one fell swoop!

Man I heart Truth and Soul records. Fallin’ Off The Reel III is a great archeological compilation with groovy space jams by Cosmic Force, the wah wah love of Timothy McNealy, and some truly great bass playing by Black Velvet. This shit is hotter than lava. Also on here is soul-tastic Lee Fields & Explorers. All the tracks are great if you want some funk/soul tasters. You should take a bite out of this one.

Red Rooster MP3 by El Michels Affair

If your a fan of this re-insurgence of psychedelic rock music of the Black Angels variety then you should pay attention to these Bay Area mystics and check out the space-outs music of Lumerians. All their jams occur on the far away planet of Transmalinnia which is like distorted pompeii keyboard trip that will make your eardrums vibrate. Except is one or two notches louder and could easily knock down any arena.

Freaks In Love – Alice Donut Documentary

My old pal David Koslowski has been working on this Alice Donut documentary with Skizz Cyzyk for the past year or so called Freaks In Love. Here’s the very exciting trailer with Jello Biafra, Martin Bisi, Kirk Kirkwood, Greg Werckman, some live footage and band interviews. I had the pleasure of seeing this psychedelic punk band a few times when they were on Alternative Tentacles. One notable time they were one of the highest paid bands to ever play the Court Tavern. Another time they drew like ass and the bar ate it but they still kicked ass.

One of the photos from one of those shows is below. I have a crap load more somewhere but doesn’t matter the events are etched in my mind. The trench coat stunk like BO but the band fuckin’ rocked like nobody’s business. New York does not make bands like this anymore. Not even close. They are above categorization in the same way you need to think twice when confronted by a transvestite that is hot under the bridge. Your mind and loins say wow but there is something disturbingly wrong. You know it is not right. Your brainspace knows it but the words don’t come out. Oh and then they start playing and it makes sense when Jello says in an interview that Alice Donut “are the mising link between REM and the Butthole Surfers” This is just the beginning of the narrative for a genuinely alternative band compared to the bland rock-n-roll your’re used too imbibing these days. Take a deep whiff. That’s your mind melting…

ALBUM REVIEW: Working too much. Too tired to write or listen to music most of the time. I am so pathetic but i did just manage to pick-up Phosphene Dream by The Black Angels. It’s killer psych and i am willing to sacrifice my will.

This is music without the need for acid and the hang-over. [Insert pot reference here] All of it is in here though with the audio experience via tremolo and lots of reverb and stereo panning. Better and bigger than Passover but just as trippy with citar riffs and puffy clouds of dust. Psychedelic slow rock for your dreams. I saw them play during the day time at the All Points West fest and was impressed. This music is better suited for a Apocalypse Now type soundtrack as it floats you down a river of chaos. The track “Telephone” is the only odd ball throwback on here in a jonestown massacre kind of way. I swear it’s a Kinks or Zombies cover. All the tracks are great though and worth a careful listen.
