Frank Black Francis

Frank Black Francis electronic

Is this a interpretative dance? No. Alternate courses and proof that a great song can be played with different instruments and feels. That is what great songsters can do. Although they have their preferred mediums like Doug Martsch and Frank Black Francis case in point have meddled into electronic-esque fabrications of some of their own music. There are other examples of side projects by many indie artists but these two are done exceptionally well since the the original were first written on a guitar. Crafted electronic revisioning of some already great songs.

Keith MolinĂ© and Andy Diagram from two pale boys helped with this “contemporization” of these Pixies songs . These tracks appear on disc 2 of Frank Black Francis(2004), Disc 1 is Frank acoustic. Here’s a couple of my faves. Although there is also a version of “Into the White” which has more of Velvet Underground vibe that alone is worth seeking the cd out and paying for the whole thing. Built to Spill Electronic Anthology Project

Brett Nelson recorded these versions of Built To Spill songs with Doug Martsch singing. They are just as good as the originals. There is a very nice BTS write-up Bradley’s Almanac on this release for more info on the mixed up songs names and concert review. Good writing so no reason to duplicate here. Enjoy. [Buy]

Thanksgiving Day Massacre MP3 by The Chinese Stars

You dig prog and are anti-holiday then you will love “Thanksgiving Day Massacre” by The Chinese Stars from their 2009 release Heaven on Speed Dial from Anchor Brain label. Think Deerhunter but with more screwed up vocals. A perfect track for to screw people up in your holiday music mix. Features Craig Kureck and Eric Paul formerly of Arab on Radar in this noise unit + another from Six Finger Satellite make up this bastard rock. Chances are if any of these guys were invited to your Thanks Giving celebration they certainly would say something uncomfortable to help get party going or start a fight. Like did you know that in “In 1868 you could get a room, a hooker, and a bottle of whiskey for $2.75. Those were the days… Now that costs $1570.53” – Joke courtesy of @kirkfox. Ok maybe we’re taking you way out but that is sort of the point with music. It’s dark, creepy and surly. Enjoy!

Warship The House Floor via craft song

Warship The House Floor via craft song

ALBUM REVIEW: The immediate happiness of Tapes n’ Tapes one feels comes to mind when listening to Warship by The House Floor band. Mainly due to the timber in the singing and low-fi-nesss of the recordings. Cheap microphones I don’t think so but certainly DIY in most respects meandering in spots while building you up in other places. I’d go deeper but the influences verge and teeter on Camper Van Beethoven and hum stylistically something closer to The Loon or The Shins. For more local reference totally remind me of Montagna & The Mouth To Mouth (track from them below). Certainly has just as much reverb as the song craft does not stick to any particular formula which makes this recording ambiently-free with just the right amount of twangy guitars for my taste. I am thankful there are no crappy keyboards or lame use of drum machines to be found so that is a big huge +. Nothing more annoying than that junk and having engineer like Andrew Maury give this mix some love certainly helps the end result. I can’t wait for their next record already.

My favorite part though are the song titles what I don’t like is that lyrics/singing are unaudible in parts and not a in a wrens sort of way but like small random pieces of paper you find that you wrote to yourself in your pocket only you may know what you scribbled. Some of these treasure titles are like kid’s notes from a childhood past or straight out of the song writers notebook. I’d say about 10 years of age or so. Which makes it a interesting theme album somehow tying the worlds together with an adult dialogue. I’d send you to one of their sites but it’s in Japanese or some shit but feel free to grab the whole record over at Listen Before You Buy. Great site they run there.

All Aboard / MLWR(LOL!) lead track from Warship
With Awkward Speech by Montagna & The Mouth To Mouth from L’avenir
The Day That Lassie Went to the Moon Camper Van Beethoven from Telephone Free Landslide Victory (1985) – Totally grab this record. Will give you an idea of what can be laid down without fear of what your cool indie friends will say in particular since all the words are clear in this style of jangle pop.[BUY]

Buzzoven vs Buzzkill

Buzzoven vs Buzzkill

Seven Inch Friday: This little punk rock story is probably one of my favorites although I probably won’t do it justice; it’s funny none the less. It’s the story of how the whole New Brunswick NJ scene got a Buzzov•en t-shirt but first about the music…

This here 7″ has three grunge pot smoking epics that came out in 1992 sometime out on the Santa Rosa CA label Kirbdog Records. The band originated out of North Carolina and was led by Kirk Fisher. He was the guy behind the violence. The instigator of sludge metal. Fans of the melvins/eyehategod know exactly who these guys are. They always used horror film samples in-between songs, real smoke and the slower the rock distortion groove the better. After lots of touring and small releases they made it to Roadrunner records and were later promptly dropped. I had the opportunity to see them several times and witnessed first hand their asinine antics of lighting fireworks and kirk pulling a gg allin drawing blood on himself or throwing bottles of bud across the room; then giggling about it like little girls when the victim could not figure out who it was. I thought it was obvious. One time at the Brighton (photo below) Kirk got upset because Sebastian Bach was asked to leave so he wouldn’t get beat up. Sounds funny but apparently he had the good pot. Kirk had his priorities.

mp3 Fade / On Your Knees

The most notable of nights happened when they decided to get in a fight with Buzzkill (NOt the uk band) after playing The Melody in New Brunswick. Now Buzzkill (formerly Butthead ) with just Dan and Bruce are 12 1/2 feet tall combined. The smelly pot smoking hippies did not stand a chance. For all their stupidity and getting pummeled they decided after being kicked-out of the party by force to take their vengeance on one of the party goers cars. In the end Kirk ended up in a orange suite for a few days in the New Brunswick lock-up and they left behind a whole box of T-shirts. Anyway, be sure to update your calender Sat Dec 26th 2009 as Buzzkill are playing The Court Tavern for a reunion show along with Prosolar Mechanics and The Stuntcocks. Bring back the 90’s man.

Album Review – ‘Til the living end of punk by Zeke (mp3)

The Living End of Punk by Zeke

The Living End of Punk by Zeke

ALBUM REVIEW:World Famous Zeke is heavy-grass ladden smoke out American Rockn’Roll punk rock. Yeah no shit. Take the really fucking ugly side of MotorHead and mix it with something really fast from the dank weed of Crypt Records and you’ve got the dark tattoo that is Zeke. Needless to say they are relentless speedy stoner rock and apparently W’s Patriot Act caught up to the band so they can’t Leave the good ole’ USA as of late. Which is good news for the rest of the minds in the world and bad for the shitty education system in America. So, if you are looking to burn some additional brain-cells. Pick-up The Living End(Released in 06′) or you can even go as far back to Flat Tracker (circa 96). That’s right Zeke bikers all the crank that is fit to make your trip wiz right by can be picked-up from Emusic if you like. They have been bringing on the blitzkrieg since 1993 and still going strong. Currently on Relapse. Damn I hope they release some new shit soon. The buzz is just wearing off from seeing them live like what must be like 10 years ago…but in the meantime cover up that crappy tattoo and listen to them.

Sample:

Download the Numbing drum pounding on “Dragon Fly” from The Livin’ End

Download more railroading on “Mystery Train” from Flat Tracker
