We love radio. We grew up on it and before there was the crazyness that is internet these days we relied on college radio that was located on the left of the dial. Here’s a few of Best New Podcasts and Radio shows based out of New Jersey and New York. AUDIBLE AFFECTS via WTSR by Jerry Lardieri
We love Jerry Lardieri’s taste in rocknroll music. We dig his band too The Brixton Riot. He’s only had a couple shows but so far he’s off to a roaring start. It’s a great way to spend a friday morning as he plays the very best new and old REAL alternative music has to offer all in one tight set of music. Dig it. Here’s his website and facebook
No Format Radio via WRSU by Jeff Wertz
Jeff used to do a show called Flexible Vinyl only show for years and years. He’s since passed the torche to Doug Vizium so the punk flame carries on. This is more free-format but well worth tunning in.
Keeping Score at home on WRPB by Jon Solomon
For folks who know any thing about the deep New Jersey music scene Jon is practically a house-hold name. Even on Christmas when he does a 24hr xmas show. Flexible Vinyl on WRSU by The Slugger
Ok while you won’t hear anything pre 1990 on this radio show and that is pushing it – don’t panic because the hour long show is a lesson in punk music. Shit if you heard of half the bands you’ll be way more punk than me. Seriously awesome show.
Breed (Nirvana Cover) by Titus Andronicus. Spin put a 20 year Nevermind comp out a little while back and I was surprised that TA broke their formula on this where they sound like a really rocking band versus a rowdy/horsy version of Crooked Fingers. Complete with octave pedal. Pretty good.
Territorial Pissings MP3 (Nirvana Cover) by Local H. this is from a whole show of Nirvana covers. Kind of funny but if you think about it they are almost a tribute band. Sort of outing themselves.
Stay Away MP3 (Nirvana Cover) By Charles Bradley & The Menahan Street Band from the same Spin comp as TA. This is the best and most awesome cover on there. Funk/soul he’s got it all my friends
Hey Joe MP3 (Jimi Hendrix cover) by The Creation. If you never heard of this band you won’t have any excuses for getting into them now. Making Time is probably the song you’ve heard on the Rushmore sound track. This cover is from the same record called We are Painterman.
Guns of Brixton MP3 (The Clash Cover) by Jimmy Cliff w/ Tim Armstrong from Rancid. Amazing how The Clash championed reggae and the black community and related in a very blue collar way to working class plight which was a re-occurring theme with the band and the respective audiences. Funny enough I always thought of Rancid as as really great Clash Cover band and here he is producing one of the godfathers of the genre some 30 odd years later with music influencing music full circle.
Ah man you haven’t heard of Matt Pinfield? What’s wrong with you? You must of been really stoned in the 90’s or your’re from Canada. The music industry in the world of DJs and VJs was pretty much catered and curated by him all the way from with his early College Radio days in the mid 80’s to today. If there is a up and coming act Uncle Matty knows about them — no researcher tells him. He just listens and literally gives them a spin. One of those place was the old Melody Bar on French Street in New Brunswick, NJ. He was involved with music from his early days on 99.7 on WRSU as the youngest DJ ever on the air, to 106.3 WHTG Program Director down the Jersey Shore, and recently was on the now format changed RXP in NY. The Music Business is relentless indeed so what’s one to do? Companies buy companies without though of any cultural repercussions.

The bad news he’s off the radio right now but still somehow the good news for the music industry is that he’s back in a big way nationally and globally for that matter on MTV2 at 1-A-freaking-M in the morning but then streaming on the hive when-ever we want. What makes him a sonic alternative music godfather is he really gets so much respect from bands from Oasis to the Foo Fighters to all the up coming indies because they themselves found influence in the bands he picked out of the record bin and spun. It’s not fake and it’s not an act. He’s a real music fan in the same way Jack Rabid is. He reads the liner notes, knows the record producers, seen the bands live countless times, knows their history and has interviewed just about everybody there is to know I think.
His presence on MTV2 is the one thing that is right today,even though NY radio is a total horrible fucking mess right now; is that Uncle Matt is now hosting 120 minutes again . Not the current faux-reality MTV bullshit but a monthly show where they show some pretty “edgy” music that’s not your run of the mill auto-tuned boring-ass pop or whatever it is that is being played in clubs these days. The stress of it all and rewards have made his life a disastrous roller-coaster for sure dealing with his own demons through the years but in this debut episode he plays videos by bands we’ve been talking about recently here on the RS Blog like Joy Formidable and Black Angels and he also digs in the vault with something off The Bends where we see Thom Yourke as a punk. So tune-in the last Saturday of every month for 2 hours of rock history and check out some new stuff.

The duo tradition of musicians goes back a long ass ways. Local H is one the greatest unknown bands who are cocky in their own right and maybe a little pissed they weren’t as cute as Jack White’s counter part. Alas on album their records sound just as full as their live show. They started their thing pre-grunge in 1986 and have been somehow managing to keep bringing the music post Cobain. Tonight this working band will jam it out at Brighton Bar in Long Branch New Jersey 4/23/11. You should go but if you can’t it’s alright. On album they simply just rock like superdrag and have more hooks than your standard tacklebox. This is not your mom’s boring alternative music. If you go scream for them to play “Puss” by The Jesus Lizard for me. Fine and Good MP3 by Local H from pack up the cats [BUY] Blood Stains (Agent Orange Cover) MP3 by Local H from their Awesome Mix Tape #1 release (2010) Lets just hope they don’t become a glorified cover band. That would be sad. Most great bands like this one know their influences so it’s cool to hear them pay homage to the music embedded in their sound because they do it damn well! Other Rock Duo Bands: Water Is Better MP3 by Bubble/Gum from their self-titled debut (2003). Wish this local Jersey shore band were still around. They had such heart and really wrote some amazing songs. Big Fan. Miner MP3 by No Age from Nouns [BUY] Noel, Jonah And Me MP3 by The Spinanes from the LP Manos (Sub Pop 1993). At some point Ted Leo made them a trio for a short stint. Regardless this album is amazing. Singer Rebecca Gates did some back-up vocals on Elliott Smith’s song “St. Ides Heaven”. Great simple bare-bone songs and thirsty like voice on her in the vain of Liz Phair. [BUY]
