Technically speaking WU-TANG CLAN’s Once Upon A Time In Shaolin is not an Album. This is 100% a transparent marketing stunt they are claiming will be art with a ridiculous million dollar price tag on “it” that nobody has even heard yet. Sure music, which is written and recorded, is a form of Art but this might as well be a hologram at this point. No fucking argument, but is something this exclusive need to be treated like Noah’s Ark? Shouldn’t music be intended for the masses to make it accepted? We’re clapping with one hand at the extremeness but it does distort the concept of making affordable art in the adopted album formats. In particular music like Hip-Hop was created for the voice of the people in streets. These folks actually might want to hear these hardcore rappers do their 90′s thing again. I know I do. Music is best when it’s a communal experience where everybody can take part. Makes it functional. This stunt is what is for sale. Maybe the music was blessed by Chinese monks and recorded in a high-priest monastery in order to keep a lid on its existence. Even if these collected pieces of recorded music travels around the world will it not be a silent auction? People will be padded down and checked for recording devices before they can swap on some swank headphones for an exclusive listen. We can’t even tell you any thing about what the recording sounds like or if it has any value as a collection of songs but allegedly it’s supposed to revert to their original beats. People will hopefully be able to take their picture with said shiny object and then swarm the Internet with more hype. We’ll make a prediction that this recording will eventually be leaked, as its existence is no longer a “secret”. A real stunt would be cementing a Boombox in Times Square playing the double album or in a loop under the Brooklyn Bridge as an installment for the people.

BEST OF WU-TANG CLAN by DJKLIN

RZA WU-TANG CLAN This is not an album
One of the reasons vinyl is making a comeback for a growing chunk of music fans is they want something tangible and exclusively theirs. Something they can hold, cherish and listen to with their friends. Even cassettes are making a comeback and those things sounded awful. Even if music these days is so devalued according to their leader RZA. The reality is most Millennials have never walked into a record store; so how do they even know what an album is? So we ask you can Once Upon a Time in Shoalin even claim itself to be an “album”? Lets also keep in mind RZA’s net worth is reportedly over $18 Million and we’re sure this ploy will add-up with ticket and merchandise sales for the group. That is where the cash money really is. Additional “sales” or streams are just a fraction of the culture they are selling back. It’s not really about the music anymore for groups that are as successful as WU-TANG. Sure enough this is just another karate chop right to the wallets of music fans.

A Brief History of Sampling by Electric Method

It would be safe to say that almost all the greatest hip hop tunes and pieces of music sampled the sound or the actual beat or a cool thing in a song from somewhere. There has been whole turn around drum beats stolen/borrowed and turned into some of the best hip-hop jams every put together. The DJ and mixmasters hard at working making their magic. In the beginning it was literally tape loops cut and put together. From The Beatles, De La Soul, Pubic Enemy and so on all the greats make this their art — much respect. Electric Method gives you a very brief history of sampling in one go all sampled together! For a LIKE they will give you a whole bunch of beats and mixtapes for free. Here’s their site with all sort of rad stuff and WhoSampled.com Enjoy!

Here’s a perfect example of what we were talking about recently with PE & Gil Scott Heron influencing the many borrowing and sampling from the best with a permanent effect on pop music. This can’t be denied.
Give The Drummer Some MP3 by Ultramagnetic MC’s.

Not Now James, We’re Busy MP3 by Pop Will Eat Itself from This Is The Day…This Is The Hour…This Is This! (1988) Legend has it that when PWEI toured with Publi Enemy they got bottled off the stage. I also did not realize that treece & Miles hunt from the Wonder Stuff were part of this band. The singer of course is Clint Mansell one of Trent Reznor’s pals who got him into film scoring. I always thought “Can you Dig it” pailed in comparison to this song and the deepest remix track Wise Up! Sucker [12_ Youth Mix] MP3

Rebirth of Cool - keep it funky Fever MP3 by Stereo MC’s from The Rebirth of Cool — A Deeper Shade Of Blues (1992). This is first of a series of amazing CD comps that came out on Island Records. If you see any of them pick them up in the used bin or pay lot of dough on the ebays. On this next track I love the congas and how jazz really open it all up with xylophone jamming throughout Taurus Woman MP3 by The Subterraneans.

Skimming the skum lefties soul connection Funky Chick MP3 by Lefties Soul Connection from Skimming the Skum. I love the show Treme mostly because it really paints a realistic picture of the musical culture where The Meters are from and what the people of New Orleans have been dealing with in rebuilding their way. This instrumental funk band is raw like that show except they are freaky Dutch white guys! Seriously be a fan and get some of this.

DJ Spooky Subliminal Minded DJ Spooky vs. Dub Pistols (Peace In Zaire Mix) MP3 by DJ Spooky from Subliminal Minded EP. This track has such a great undergroove you want it to keep going and going until you fall down. I think if I ever got a chance to slip this in the party would have to really be bouncing I’d play it twice in a row. Try it! Here’s a bonus track called Organ Donor MP3 from Endtroducing… Which has this church like keyboard part that reminds me of pink floyd a little bit intertwined with a dream beat. Ever see the Phillip Glass movie Koyaniskaski? It’s like an excerpt of that.

CD of JB James Brown's Sex Machine & other Soul ClassicsSoul Power MP3 from The CD of JB Sex Machine & other Soul Classics. Any comp of his best of is an amazing feat in rhythm and blues but you gotta listen with your funk because it’s about the notes they don’t play my brother. In particular on the bass part of Licking Stick – Licking Stick MP3. It’s mostly bass, with some drum clicking and with intermittent horns and guitar playing down and up beats as your’re doing the James Brown. Love it when he works himself him in as an actionable word. I don’t know can you dig it?

DJ Danny, A.K.A. Akalepse holding Gil Scott-Heron's Winter in America

It was 1987. Public Enemy had just popped into the scene. We were clueless pre-adults about to be released into the world. We knew who Malcolm X was from English class which only really came together after hearing their words and his radical words pumped out through the speakers of the political defense system that the revolution would in fact not be televised. Or would it? We knew the Beastie Boys brought us some awesome party music but there was no way they invented this music. The nerative was too pure with all sorts thoughts and stories making history real-time. The master at telling them was Gil Scot-Heron who preached about a black and proud nation. PE took the bass and drum parts isolated and amplified their message to give rap music edge. We were white kids and we went deep. Explored hip-hop tape and records shops in Plainfield NJ in the middle of the day for more. Where we just used to buy beer and pot. This time the contra-band was Hip Hop. More radical than punk rock and hardcore. Gil Scot-Heron let us know this has been going on for awhile and PE were just some of the messengers. Thanks Beasties for making it alright and RIP Gil — G*d Bless.
