Sound Station Presents – Black Wine (Live Videos)

Black Wine Live - Don Giovanni Records bands
Here’s a few videos of one our favorite Don Giovanni Records bands playing live called Black Wine at a Sound Station presents show. They are just as much retro SST-punk and forward unpunk as it gets. Also on the bill that night was our house band Eastern Anchors, Tri-State, Dollar Store Riot and a bunch of other local locals. BW have a new record called Yell Boss and it’s coming out in early June on the New Brunswick label Don Giovanni Records. You heard it here first folks. They recorded their new album at Volume IV in New Brunswick with Brian from Risk Relay and we can’t wait to check it out. Miranda the drummer/singer for the band also recently started a talky podcast called Totally Bitchin that she does with Jamie from a new band called Small talk. They have about 10 episodes already and worth a listen if you are jonesying for yet another decent podcast. Their most recent show is a interview with Miranda’s hub Jeff who used to play with The Ergs! They are mainly focusing on the local NJ music scene which we think is great. Macaulay-Culkin-grainy-tv
All the rock news we care to print from around the web along with the good the bad and the fucktards. This week we have Culkin’s pizza band, Helms Alee, new Afghan Whigs announced, Don Giovanni Records show, Slint box set and more!

NEW HELMS ALEE!

Good interview with Ben Verellen the singer guitarist over at Bearded Gentlemen. He talks about touring with two ladies and how their approach to touring is much different than the male drive all night attitude.

The band Featuring Macaulay Culkin Performed in a New Brunswick Basement. Apparently a crowd of 200 Turns out to see the former child star in his band The Pizza Underground. Shortly before 9pm, Culkin and the band’s four other members entered the basement performed a short 15-minute set, changing the lyrics of several classics such as “Take a Walk on The Wild Side” (“Take a Bite of The Wild Slice”) and “Perfect Day” (“Pizza Day”). Pretty funny. via New Brunswick Today

Sling Spiderland Box set on touch and go records
Touch and Go announced they will be releasing a SLINT Spiderland Box set in April in case you were dying to hear some of the extra stuff. I think in all fairness the only box set you need to own is the Matador Chavez one which barely had two extra tunes on it. This one will have 14 unleased tracks and demos plus a forward by Will Oldham and the A 90 minute Lance Bangs Breadcrumb Trail Documentary. Which has interviews with Slint and the usual suspects: Steve Albini, James Murphy, David Yow, Ian Mackaye, and Matt Sweeney from Chavez.

Brain Wilson's Secret Tapes 1968-1973 - Beach Boys!
Beach Boys secret Bedroom Tapes we’re discovered (1968-1973) when Brian Wilson stopped being involved with the band and was prescribed Thorazine for anxiety; after recording the album Friends. In 1968 Brian Wilson was just not caring anymore, he was mixing pills with booze, pot and cocaine, he became increasingly withdrawn. Read the full article on LA Weekly.

Pastoral Spy Rock Memories by Larry Livermore

Pastoral Spy Rock Memories by Larry Livermore

Spy Rock Memories by Larry Livermore Book Review - published by Don Giovani Records

on Don Giovani Records

BOOK REVIEW: The day was already going to be a loverly morning. The kids were going with their Mom, Aunt and cousins to a kids zoo and I got a pass to enjoy the last day of vacation carousing around to do whatever I wanted. This never happens. So I did some research and wrote down a list of record and bookstores to hit up for a vinyl dig. Sure friends wanted me to hit Ameoba which if I had time would be on the agenda. Without GPS drove around downtown Oakland in my brothers old stick-shift Subaru until I finally stumbled upon the first place. 1-2-3-4 Go Records which was 98% filled with well organized Rock, Metal, Indie and Misc vinyl albums. Literally had about 200 CDs and rest all stax of wax. Since I was traveling browsing the selection of 7″s was in order. Anyway half thru new album release section some skinny older slender gentleman looking like John Waters with his slightly grown in mustache and backpack starts talking to the Clerk and then they both point to some books that were stuffed next to a bunch of fanzines. I don’t see fanzines anymore at records stores on the East Coast but there was comet bus and couple others.

Actually come to think about it there are barely any record stores anymore at all in New Jersey. Never mind stalking hand-made xeroxed fanzines! I can count like 4 stores from the dozen or I used to frequent. Anyway, the point this guy turned out to be Larry Livermore himself. The first hippie punk rocker.

They gestured some more and off he went and disappeared into the great abyss which is Oakland. Which is pretty much how his book ends.  He mostly strays away from day to day grind of running his label Lookout Record which at the time was easily a Million Dollar business a couple times over. He instead focuses on how he went from city guy to mountain man. In fighting with his neighbors, growing pot, learning how to irrigate his food and where he started his first local fanzine.  He interweaves his hippie activism roots which are at the core of most of his adventures which led him to help found Gilman street during his stint living at MMR HQ (that’s Maxium RocknRoll for you newbs). He tells the story how one of his own bands he started with basically local mountain kids. One of them we all know as Tre from Green Day who were one of biggest bands on his roster along with the likes of Operation Ivy. Either way this is a good read and you and should inspire you to read more books and do more things. Even if on a whim like my venture to a little record store.

Black Wine’s Summer of Indifference

Black Wine’s Summer of Indifference

Black Wine Summer of Indifference Don Giovanni RecordsALBUM REVIEW: There are a lot of fuzz-o-gistics going on with Black Wine’s Summer of Indifference from their familiar So Cals sounds at times that are mixed with some Mission of Burma and then there are these epic zen-arcadian moments that just rip up the planks. There are also dark pop gems like “Maycrowing” with Miranda their drummer singing who’s narrative like storytelling style evens out the Milo-esque keel in this vessel. In earnest all the vocal melodies drive this underground popish outfit. It’s a very fine roast of 80′ and 90’s pre-punk homage and alternative nostalgia mixed together with great song writing effortless care. If Pretty Girls Make Graves made kin with any of the above this is what’d you get. More band name dropping here than F-Bombs on an episode of the Real House Wifes of New Jersey I know; but it’s true. Listening to this album’s summer soliloquy makes this writing thing actually exciting with a band that has so many songs worth listening to in a row. They are champions as they conjure up Olympic rock anthems like well toned athletes can find their pace song after song. The influences and DNA is all in here — they are naturals which may come from their local jerz pedigree perhaps; featuring members of Full of Fancy, Hunchback and The Ergs shinning in full here– This band is realized. Where as their first self-titled full length was charming and rocked well. Jury is still out on their Ian Anderson Jethro Tull cover. This one is mighty and a very strong follow-up not to be left in the bin as it’s already in our top 10 for 2011. That’s All!
