Caress my electric guitar by Free Electric State

Caress my electric guitar by Free Electric State

ALBUM REVIEW: I like my 90’s rock and love it when bands take slices and load squealing droning distorted guitars and paste them up in their songs in a melodic format. This is not your monotone indie rock-band and I wouldn’t dare call Free Electric State’s – Caress retro in the least but there are hints of undeniable dark influences like Sioux and the Banshees backed with the equal nod to pop sentiment of The Breeders; mixed in there when the band breaks it down and turns the fuzz-off, you get a blast of warm vocal air. Holistically it’s raw enough to please your shoe-geezer crowd and way better than most ironically groomed facial hair bands.

The dueling guitars are led by David Koslowski and Nick Williams which are complimented gracefully by the vocals of ShirlĂ© Hale. Koslowski and Hale are North Carolina transplants who had played previously together in Baltimore’s Gerty! and Ex-Members. Koslowski foremerly fronted local grungesters Liquor Bike and made infamous Melody Lane their home. Needless to say these folks can be my DJ’s anytime and that is saying a lot.

Review: Andalusians Do the Work Indeed

Review: Andalusians Do the Work Indeed

Dear Andalusians, the womyn in rock sometimes try and sound like the musical genius that were Throwing Muses and end up sounding like a Scrawl record on slommo. I’m more of A fan of the Donelly / Hersh contingency and always appreciated the soulful swirly vocals and absent crash cymbals. Liked that there were no solos and chorus’s to be had. The comparison for the new 7″ ep on Dischord by Andalusians is uncanny for the title track “Do the Work”. Lots of quirky guitar melodies backed by a solid rhythm section that compliment the vocals organically. This collection of songs has the House Tornado vibe for sure but also shows me that indie rock lives strong like a ghost know its home. Earthy, warm and all sorts of analog fills this music and picks up right in the sweet spot. I will even dare to say that some real chops are channeled and reworked so it’s all new kids. See them on their tour of America now!

Superdrag roots reunion drinking bender session

Superdrag roots reunion drinking bender session

Ah, the unearthing of demos. Always a cool thing for hardcore fans. Sometimes such things should remain in the ground but in the case of Knoxville Tenessee 90’s alterative pioneers, SUPERDRAG, some of their songs are pure indie greatness that they would not surpass until their single “Keep it Close to me” at least in my humble opinion. Check out the six-bender post by Heather on Fuelfriends. My buddy Walter is heading to the show this weekend for a roadtrip to TN with his brother and I’m extremely jealous, allas a lot of stuff out there if you dig in the right spot. I’ll have to settle for getting home safe this weekend and having a beer bender of my own.
